Position will be in Edgerton KS and would oversee both Edgerton and Lenexa locations.

 

Standard hours 8:00am – 5:00pm, Monday – Friday (with flexibility, due to 24 hour plant schedule)

 

Summary:


Under limited supervision, directs the development, implementation, and maintenance of comprehensive environmental, safety, and health programs for the plant, including programs, policies, and procedures that are compliant and promote continuous improvement. Provides the leadership, direction, and support necessary to ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and standards to meet or exceed relevant internal and external EH&S standards consistent with sound business practice. Develops and maintains relationships with all levels within and outside the organization, from corporate, regional, and plant management to supervisors and hourly employees in the production areas. Works within a defined budget for the EHS function. As a vital member of the EHS global team, supports all Hershey locations in maintaining regulatory compliance by issuing guidance and sharing best practices. Follow up with compliance audits and provide tools to ensure compliance is sustainable. Participate on a global EHS team (ergo, PSM, environmental, IH, etc.) The position may direct the work of other salary or hourly persons and/or consultants.
 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Develop and administer the facility EHS management systems, including employee participation, employee health, hazard analyses, safe operating procedures, training, risk management, loss control, spill prevention, hazardous waste, DOT hazardous materials, emissions, emergency planning (EPCRA) and all other key system elements.
  • Implement and maintain site standards and policies based on the EHS COE standards and policies.
  • Provide leadership and direction in developing, administering, and maintaining EHS compliance and continuous improvement program elements.
  • Serve as liaison with support from Corporate EH&S applicable external regulatory agencies and coordinate and follow-up on EHS audits to ensure satisfactory compliance. Ensure all required reports are completed and submitted as required.

  • Implement and maintain site standards and policies based on the EHS COE standards and policies.
  • Facilitate compliance with facility, regional, corporate, and regulatory environmental & safety standards, and guidelines through audits, inspections, recordkeeping, and data documentation. Assist management with investigations, provide corrective or preventive measures recommendations, and maintain accurate environmental and injury/illness records. Participate as part of the site leadership team.
  • Facilitate compliance by completing waste, water, and air permit renewals.
  • Maintain current working knowledge of EHS regulations and laws to provide expertise for EHS assessments, capital projects, work orders, and general EHS-related problem-solving at the site, regional and corporate levels as needed.
  • Manage salary, hourly, and contract personnel to perform daily functions. Support staff and personnel development for goal alignment, prioritization of work, and coaching for effective performance.
  • Ensure compliance with the site Security Program.
  • Supervise certified wastewater pre-treatment plant personnel and provide management support to ensure compliance with local regulations.
  • Working knowledge of Worker’s Compensation.

 

Minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform major duties/responsibilities successfully:

 

  • Detailed knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and other applicable industry environmental, health, and safety standards
  • Strong analytical skills to evaluate performance metrics and outcomes.
  • Superior communication skills – verbal and written.
  • Ability to manage and train staff, including organizing, prioritizing, scheduling daily work and projects, and promoting professional development.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills with the ability to develop multiple solutions to an issue and make valid recommendations for resolution.
  • Able to understand and execute processes, including recognizing customer needs, communicating process changes, measuring and assessing success, and identifying areas of improvement.
  • Ability to work under pressure.

  • Skill in budget preparation and management
  • Ability to develop and implement environmental and safety policies, programs, and training.
  • Experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SAP computer applications.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing practices and processes.
  • Ability to adjust work hours as needed.
  • Able to climb ladders and stairs and lift moderately heavy items such as test equipment or materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to move between tasks and projects on short notice and quickly change priorities based on customer and department needs while meeting project deadlines. (Flexibility is critical in this role as priorities change quickly).
  • Able to work well in a team environment or independently.
  • Ability to work with COE or external resources to complete industrial hygiene studies.

 

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • A bachelor's degree in Occupational / Industrial Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Environmental Science, or another EHS-related field is preferred; other four-year degrees will be considered
  • Certification in an EHS-related discipline and/or education beyond a Bachelor’s Degree is preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment related to EHS program management
  • Preference for manufacturing experience
