Job Title: Sensory Research Scientist

Job Location: Hershey, PA





Reporting to the Sensory Manager, Product Quality in Sensory and Product Insights and working at The Hershey Company’s Technical Center, the Sensory Research Scientist position provides project leadership of some medium complexity initiatives, assisting on higher complexity initiatives, leading workstreams within larger initiatives, and/or leadership of multiple low complexity initiatives. Complexity of a workstream can be increased through technical complexity, manufacturing complexity, speed to market, quantity of projects, and cross-functional support. A low to medium level of autonomy of medium or higher-level complexity initiatives, or high level of autonomy for low complexity initiatives is required. A successful candidate is developing the capability to demonstrate and apply technical knowledge and expertise.  This candidate is developing the ability to grow and share technical expertise within functional area and cross functionally within the organization and developing problem solving skills & the ability to think critically. This candidate is developing the capability to communicate technical subject matter written and verbally cross functionally and with management.  This candidate is developing the capability to influence cross functional team members and building personal networks to provide solutions.


Specific Role Focus Area:

  • Plan and execute sensory and/or acceptability testing on quality initiatives such as alternate supplier approvals, continuous improvement projects, flavor and odor migration, shelf-life determination and product/process optimizations.
  • Plan and execute Descriptive Analysis projects, includes statistical data analysis and reporting of results
  • Develop sensory lexicons/attributes for new product categories
  • Product/process optimizations to improve quality and market performance

Major Duties/Responsibilities

Plan and execute Descriptive analysis projects in support of business needs including cost improvements, product/process optimization, innovation, plant troubleshooting and commodity testing (including data analysis and reporting).


Plan and execute Discrimination and hedonic research methods in support of productivity improvements, shelf life testing, innovation, plant troubleshooting and commodity testing (including data analysis and reporting).



Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform major duties/responsibilities: 


  • Demonstrated capability in designing research plans and leading Sensory projects at University and/or CPG company employing Descriptive, Affective and Discrimination test methods.
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Office:  Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.)
  • General knowledge of data entry software (i.e. Compusense, Eyequestion) and working knowledge of statistics (univariate and multivariate stats, Regression, PCA, etc.) with practical experience analyzing sensory and/or consumer acceptability data using Stat Graphics, SAS JMP, R, or other stats software.
  • Ability to interact effectively with large and diverse group of people
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize with limited supervision

      Excellent organizational and communication skills

  • BONUS:  Knowledge and demonstrated application of R Shiny and webapp development



Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: 


  • B.S. or M.S. degree in Food Science, Psychology, or Statistics with emphasis in Sensory Science.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of applicable work experience with Sensory testing (sensory co-ops can be applied as relevant experience.
