Summary:

 

  • Reporting to the Manager in Ingredient Technology Development and working at the Technical Center in Hershey, PA, the Sr. Research Scientist position provides project leadership on medium complexity projects, assisting on higher complexity projects, leading workstreams within larger projects and programs, and/or leadership of multiple low complexity projects.  A low to medium level of autonomy of medium or higher-level complexity projects, or high level of autonomy for low complexity projects is expected.  A successful candidate is expected to have basic knowledge of technical competencies and focused on technical breadth and communicate project updates to cross-functional team members and management.  

 

Specific Role Focus Area:

  • Use Food Science and Food Processing principles to support characterization and ingredient technnology development projects which provide competitive advantage to the Hershey Company.
  • Heavy focus on characterization for Salty Snacks and Protein Snacks.
  • The successful candidate will manage relationships internally and externally with business partners, suppliers, research institutes, universities and other service providers to deliver required research results.
  • Successful Candidate will participate in project design and methodology, test ideas through experimentation, and determine next steps through problem solving. Significant focus will be placed on method development for analyses.
  • Hands-on skills involving running laboratory equipment and independent operation and maintenance of analytical equipment are required.
  • Presentation of project results will be expected in both written and oral forms.
  • Provide leadership and instruction to technicians.

 

This role will interact and partner with:

This role may require 10-15% travel.

 

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

 

Project Leadership for Characterization

  • Independent leadership of characterization projects and initiatives.
  • Independent operation and maintenance of analytical equipment.
  • Method Development for Analysis.
  • Hands-on work involving running lab equipment.
  • Troubleshoot technical questions.
  • Provide leadership and instruction to technicians. 
  • Manage and prioritize workload to maximize efficiency of characterization program.

 

 

Capability Building for Characterization
 

  • Actively seek, develop and evaluate new internal and external characterization capabilities for Hershey. This may include equipment, methodologies, consultants, experts, and/or facilities.

 

 

Research design, data analysis, presentation and knowledge management 

 

  • Design and execute experiments, analyze data and provide conclusions through multiple communication tools and formats. Use appropriate statistical tools as necessary. Prepare clear and detailed project reports.
  • Deliver presentations of significant results to drive business decisions.

 

 

 

 

Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform major duties/responsibilities: 

 

  • Prior experience with analytical techniques such as GC-MS, HPLC, rheometer, DSC, MRI, texturometer, particle size analyzer and other analytical equipment.
  • Sound technical knowledge of food science, analysis and processing.
  • Capable of applying characterization findings to de-risk projects and startups.
  • Support analytical method development.
  • Solid project management and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated success in leading a research project or research workstream.
  • Possesses strong computer skills (basic knowledge of Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams)
  • Ability to work in a team environment and independently in a flexible work environment with changing priorities.
  • Strong mathematical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Strong listening skills
  • Prior technical report writing experience
  • Attention to detail (especially technical details)

 

 

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: 

 

  • MS or PhD in Food Science, Chem or Bio with 0-2 years related experience, or BS in FS, Chem, or Bio with 2-4 years’ experience
  • Experience in food materials characterization is preferred but not required.
