This position is responsible for the design and technical development of packaging solutions for new and existing Hershey products. Working independently and as part project teams the Engineer will lead the packaging development process as the subject matter expert from concept to implementation and optimization. The position supports manufacturing operations via coordination of packaging materials qualification trials and provides strong technical and problem-solving solutions.
Collaborating with business partners the Senior Packaging Engineer will create innovative packaging solutions in support of new product introductions which perform effectively throughout the supply chain, at retail, and during consumption. The position requires strong detailed timeline development and project management, proactive technical analysis and risk assessment, and ability to communicate clearly in technical and non-technical settings. Further, the position requires demonstrated strong working knowledge of flexible film pack-types and molded plastic packaging and filling processes.
The successful candidate will demonstrate strong personal leadership, sound technical aptitude, applied understanding of quality systems and measures, and a disciplined approach to the commercialization process.
Major responsibilities:
- Research, recommend, and develop packaging solutions to meet project commercialization goals.
- Develop project plans that define scope, tasks, schedule, costs, risks, and business impact.
- Execute plans and identify issues/obstacles/risks, propose solutions, gain alignment and bring to resolution.
- Develop and execute analytical testing on materials and packaging to determine packaging feasibility and performance.
- Develop packaging designs which optimize manufacturing performance on new or existing automation equipment.
- Define packaging material specifications that maximize product quality, integrity, and shelf-life within cost constraints.
- Develop packaging bill of materials and pack-out guidelines to instruct effective packaging manufacturing and assembly.
- Conduct value analysis and cost reduction activities to optimize packaging performance and reduce waste.
Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required:
- Possess strong working knowledge of advanced packaging concepts and principles and automation systems.
- Strong technical and application knowledge of commercial packaging materials and converting technologies
- Possess strong mechanical aptitude and ability to understand interrelation of material, equipment & process
- Ability to design transport simulation tests and interpret results and articulate appropriate next steps.
- Strong critical thinking skills to consider how constraints/changes impact design and functional attributes
- Proven problem solving skills that successfully identify and define root cause and provide effective solutions.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively and constructively with others to accomplish a common objective.
- Self-motivated and takes initiative independently; recognizes need for proactive response to meet business need
- Proven ability to successfully and consistently prioritize and manage a large volume of projects simultaneously.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
BS in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related science field or 6+ years of experience in Packaging Development at a CPG company.
