Job Location: Stuarts Draft, VA

 

 

Summary:

The Hershey Plant in Stuarts Draft, VA, is a Non-Union plant producing products such as Reese Cups, Reese Filled Shapes, Reese’s Pieces, and other varieties in a high-speed, complex manufacturing environment.

 

Provides leadership and direction for the development of safety programs to ensure compliance with regulations and company policy.  Develop and implement plant-wide safety policies and programs.  Conduct safety assessments and provide safety guidance to BU Managers, supervisors, and other functional teams.  Develop and deliver safety training programs to all levels of management and employees across the plant.  Participate in and provide leadership on multifunctional teams to deliver safety support and guidance.  Work with numerous internal customers.  Interact with local, state/provincial, and federal level regulators. 

 

In addition, the Sr EHS Specialist:

  • Provides Safety Support on Second Shift
  • Leads Ergonomics Program
  • Leads Hearing Conservation Program
  • Leads Industrial Hygiene Program
  • Leads implementation of Corporate EHS Initiatives
  • Performs regular internal audits and documents and reports findings and follows-up on non-conformances.  Participate/lead verification and validation activities for Safety Management System aspects and safety regulatory compliance. 
  • Support the site EHS management system through hazard analysis, safe operating procedures, training, risk management and all other key elements of the program
  • Support the development, administration, and maintenance of safety compliance programs to include developing training programs: interface with outside environmental agencies; and coordinate and follow-up on EHS audits to ensure satisfactory compliance. Ensures all supporting documentation as required by company is kept current
  • Facilitate compliance with facility, corporate and regulatory safety standards and guidelines through safety audits, inspection programs and data documentation
  • Leads incident investigations and analyzes incidents to identify trends in people safety information.  Initiates corrective and preventative action plans and communicates findings as appropriate.  Assist Business Unit Leaders and supervisors to determine resolution and implement corrective actions.  Uses various computer support systems (ex. Vector, SharePoint) to document data. 
  • Maintain a current working knowledge of safety regulations and laws
  • Partner with facility operating units and corporate staff for the purpose of providing expertise in safety assessment, employee concerns, and subsequent safety related problem solving
  • Respond to, coordinate, and follow-up on all appropriate safety issues in a timely and effective manner to minimize liability and negative impact on the business.
  • Complete Post-Incident and Reasonable Suspicion Drug Screenings when necessary
  • Supports Environmental initiatives and regulatory compliance
  • Supports employee engagement activities

 

Skills and Experience:

  • Detailed working knowledge of federal, state and local occupational safety industry regulations and guidelines (OSHA, EPA, L&I, other)
  • Proficiency in learning management systems
  • Experience in ergonomic assessment and risk mitigation
  • Experience in Hearing Conservation Program management
  • Strong document management skills and attention to details
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong problem solving/trouble shooting skills
  • Strong auditing / assessment skills
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to influence all levels of employees
  • Proficiency in computer programs / software such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Access, Power Point, SAP EH&S and SAP PM
  • Must have the ability to plan, prioritize, and complete multiple priorities.
  • Ability to self-lead work tasks to completion.
  • Must be able to work well in a team environment but also have the ability to work independently.
  • Must have strong employee training development and presentation skills.
  • Flexibility is key in this role as priorities change quickly. Must be able to move between tasks and projects on short notice and quickly change priorities based on customer and department needs, while meeting project deadlines.
  • Ability to work flexible hours
  • Ability to climb ladders to work platforms, climb stairs to other work areas.  Lifting moderately heavy items such as test equipment or materials. 

 

Minimum Requirements and Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational/Industrial Safety, Engineering, or other field relevant to food science or manufacturing is required. 
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment related to EHS program management. 
  • Experience with fall protection systems, confined space entry, hot work, and combustible dust required.
  • Preference for food, food-related or consumer package goods experience.
  • Experience in Safety Management System (VPP, OHSAS 18001, ANSI Z10) is a plus
